I had been anxiously awaiting my new XF 300 last year, after a long period of testing and frustration with HDSLR video . Like so many of you out there, I was looking for the perfect video “step up” to HDSLR cameras. Much of my professional work is around conducting and producing interviews, so it became necessary look towards a better solution than just HDSLR video and a secondary audio device.

My initial tests weren’t so promising with the HDSLRs – definitely some great looking pictures for a web interview but less than satisfactory sound. I spent quite a bit of time testing and retesting various scenarios in the studio to come up with a workable option. I adopted the secondary audio capture process as part of my overall workflow – luckily, my business partner is an excellent audio guru – but we both realized how fragile an alternate audio solution could be towards getting a superior product overall…

I managed to capture some great stuff… but I was determined to get something better. And then I had to consider the native .MOV format coming out of the HDSLRs – a highly compressed video stream that didn’t play so well with the last generation of NLE’s (video editing suites).

Based on all that testing, all the gigs that I shot, I realized that I needed something faster, better and consistent for shooting dialog-driven interviews – and that’s how I picked up the Canon XF 300…

Coming up – no delays – we’ll start pulling apart some footage tests that I shot with the Canon XF 300 series…
