Canon XF Color Profile – a video reference

As part of the “Secrets of Great Color” with the Canon XF Series cameras, I shot the following clip using a variety of Custom Profiles or Color Profiles that have been shared by others throughout the web.

I wanted to create a basis for understanding and tweaking color within the Canon XF series.  Custom Profiles like those used in the content below will be the basis of our discussion with “Secrets of Great Color with the Canon XF Series”.

Here’s a reference document on the XF Camera settings from Alan Roberts

Commercial Shoot BTS

dual-shoot-still-and-video

Hi Folks:

Just wanted to pass along some BTS (behind the scenes) views of a recent project that I shot.  I was very fortunate to be the DP on a shoot that combined a few of my “loves” around image making:  Lighting, Problem Solving, Still Photography and Video.  Since it was a “mixed” day, I ended up lighting with Arri Tungsten 1K’s to give a sense of a garage or workshop to the set.

A tall order to carry out in a day, but our crew and client were on the same page to get some great results.

IKan Stealth ENG

I recently upgraded my Canon XF camera mount to include a shoulder mount ENG-style kit.  The IKan stealth is a comprehensive and adjustable mount system built around a 15mm rod system that offers great adjustability along with a shoulder mount kit.

I’ve added some additional 15mm rods and handles to increase comfort while using the rig.  Also, if you notice closely, I’ve added a Canon Remote controller to the left-hand side -  so zoom, record, focus are now right underneath my left thumb.

Corporate Travel and Conference…

Today’s post is about a project done recently for a large state-wide advocacy organization.  Their annual meeting takes place in each year, and offers some of the best information on current industry topics and affairs that I’ve ever had the pleasure to experience.

I look forward to their upcoming programs…

Thoughts on how I got to the “Great Color” blog…

xf300_body

I had been anxiously awaiting my new XF 300 last year, after a long period of testing and frustration with HDSLR video .  Like so many of you out there, I was looking for the perfect video “step up” to HDSLR cameras.  Much of my professional work is around conducting and producing  interviews, so it became necessary look towards a better solution than just HDSLR video and a secondary audio device.

My initial tests weren’t so promising with the HDSLRs – definitely some great looking pictures for a web interview but less than satisfactory sound.  I spent quite a bit of time testing and retesting various scenarios in the studio to come up with a workable option.  I adopted the secondary audio capture process as part of my overall workflow – luckily, my business partner is an excellent audio guru – but we both realized how fragile an alternate audio solution could be towards getting a superior product overall…

I managed to capture some great stuff… but I was determined to get something better. And then I had to consider the native .MOV format coming out of the HDSLRs – a highly compressed video stream that didn’t play so well with the last generation of NLE’s (video editing suites).

Based on all that testing, all the gigs that I shot, I realized that I needed something faster, better and consistent for shooting dialog-driven interviews – and that’s how I picked up the Canon XF 300…

Coming up – no delays – we’ll start pulling apart some footage tests that I shot with the Canon XF 300 series…
